I was wondering if any handy mechanic would have an idea of what may be the problem with my ~1985 20 evinrude? This past weekend I went to run it in Hay Bay out back of the cottage and it would only run at about 1/2 speed and that is with the choke out. I had to keep the choke out at all times or it would die. Plugs, wires and carb are good, new carb kit as of this spring by a marina in L Simcoe. Good gas too. Thanks for any suggestions.

This may sound strange but is the gas super? A guy in camp had the exact same problem, put in a tank of super and it ran great! Go figure

almost sound to me like adelivery problem most cases if you have to run with choke on you may have a vacume leak or you pump is weak check that all rubber hosees leaving the pump for cracks or maybe broken

100% agree i just went through this with my brother and he changed the ball on the gas line and all is well, but it may even be the hole line as buckflash said,in any event if thats what it is its a cheap fix....

If at any time your running with the choke your motor is lacking fuel, and there for your problem is that there is not enough fuel getting to or through your carb. Since you had your carb cleaned this spring and you ran your boat at least twice a month then your carb should be still clean so start from the fuel tank and work your way to the carb inspecting hose, hose clamps, fuel filter, pump, and to the carb.

Thanks for the info. I replaced the gas line/ bulb at the same time I had the carb done from the dealer. Quite diffrence in fuel line material from a dealer hose to a CrappyTire fuel line. $50 almost twice the cost of the CT fuel line but will outlive it I'm sure. I pushed the bulb with the fuel screen off and plenty of fuel is getting through. I'm going for new fuel and draining the carb first. I'll let everyone know how it turned out.
