Begginer Trolling Help

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while so I feel bad just firing questions out there. I was going to talk to Ron at Skevy's but not to sure on what happened to him. My buddy and I decided we want to start trolling for eyes out on the bay and we have a general idea of where to go and what to use. I just wanted to know some thing about using leadcore and boards. What pound test leadcore is best to use for walleye. We generally use 27# out in lake O for kings. Do you prefer running a mono or fluoro leader? Also can you run leadcore off a board? The last thing I wanted to know if how do you know if you have a fish on the board?? Never seen one caught on a board before so Im kind of puzzled on what to expect( if anything at all). We appreciate any help you guys can give us. Maybe we'll see a few of you out there. Thanks again.

Yes you can run boards with led core the thing is your not running ten segments like you would on lake O but three because the weight of the led will sink your in line board. I run #27 lead as you it's the the middle of the bunch you can run what ever line you prefer they all work I guess it's just preference as how do the boards act during a fish I had some disappear under the water some will just look like it's jumping others just are pulled back couple feet from where it should be aligned with the boat when you placed it. Those are the worst as you might be towing that fish for a while till you realize something is on it also sucks when you grab garbage on the line as you don't know it's there.

You can run leadcore behind the boards, I have run 10 colour core behind them and it does drag the board down a bit, but it works. You really don't need to run 10 colours for eyes though. You shouldn't have to go that deep, and only go that deep if you are planning to keep them. Releasing eyes you catch below 30 feet isn't a good idea as the mortality rate is higher. As for the line weight, if you have 27# already spooled use it. I prefer flourocarbon leader maker material, more for the abrasion resistance then the visibility, but mono will work also.

As for where to go, this time of year there are lots of boats out there, just follow the pack. East of the ferry is good from late Oct to ice up and you will get fish in Picton Bay and off thompson and sherman's starting mid November.

As hookemhard said you will see the board "fall back" when you have a fish on. If you have two boards out the same side they should line up (unless you are running core behind one), a board will "fall back" out of formation when you have a fish on. If you get a big one there is no doubt you have a fish on, it will pull back and forth and you will know for sure you have a fish on. Smaller fish will have a more subtle fall back of the board. Pay attention to the boards and after a fish or two you will know what to look for. It isn't rocket science.

Thank you guys very much. We are going out tomorrow morning and are going to run 4 boards threee mono and one lead core(obviously east of the ferry). Again we really appreciate the help guys.
