Hi There, A buddy of mine and myself will be going to Picton for hopefully a little walleye fun. Being new to the planer boards myself I was wondering how far back from the boards do you run before you clip in. Aswell does it very as the water temps drop anything will help, just looking for basics.

Thanks 8)

Well that can be a difficult question, it really depends on what lure you are running, what depth you want it to be at and what depth of water you are fishing. Be more specific and I will give you the answers you are looking for.

There is a book called Precision Trolling that you should pick up. Will tell you how much line to let out to get the desired depth for the crank you are running. Let out the amount of line you want and then clip on the board and let it out the desired distance from the boat.

all those lures will max out with 150 feet of line out at less than 30 feet deep

land shark,
if your giving planer board lessons, i would love to get some on the water lessons, my boat or yours doesnt matter, i have a bass boat however. i dont mind tossing you a case of beer or dinner. i was big on them 10 years ago, when they werent popular, never had any luck, they have changed alot since then, i should buy a current set, they look alot prettyer now. lol

Just a reminder that the test done in the Precision Trolling book were with 10# mono and 10# braid with specific line diameters. So your lure depth would be affected with the use of a different diameter line.
