My younger brothers motor was working well till we went out one day in July last year had some heavy waves we were just trying to get back in to shore and all of a sudden it revs really high and we got no reverse or forward but it will go into neutral as soon as you put it back in gear it revs super high and doesnt go into gear.... does anyone have any idea what the problem could be or suggest a reasonable mechanic that could help him out????
Mike :)

My guess is something went in the lower unit. some gear has stripped.......... there used to be a guy A-! on rednersville road, really great guy......... i think he moved his shop to his house and works there now, maybe he would give a good estimate for repair alot of times its just a lower end rebuild just a gear or two. mostly labor

My motor did the exact same thing this summer. I thought that there was a major issue with it, but it turned out to be the throttle cable. There is a plastic coating that goes over a metal wire that if completely cracked through will slide and leave the metal wire in place. Seems as though the metal wire controlled the gears while the plastic outer cover controlled the throttle. So when I put it in forward it would just rev really high. Sometimes it would even go into gear for a second and then slide out of gear.

All I did was take a hose clamp and placed it over the crack and now the motor works good as new.

So check the wire and you may be pleasantly surprised.

It might just be the rubber spinning inside of the prop.I had that happen on a old 9.5 and I thought it was a problem with the gears but a new prop fixed it up.

that could also be true, if the shift cable isnt working right it might not even be shifting fully in gear, and popping right back out, have you tried dissconnecting, and shifting manually ? Jhonson countrouls always have a plastic knob you adjust to make it stay in gear when you use the controul. maybe thats gotten out of adjustment, or stripped out at the threads you need a new controul cable....... just disconnect the thingie mabobber from the whatchamajig and try shifting in manually if it stays in gear then you know where the problem is . good luck

1976 still uses shear pins. No rubber hub. My guess is the linkage rod has loosened and will not completely engage either forward or reverse. Half way down the lower unit there is an elongated oval inspection plate. 2"x1/2" held by two screws. Remove the cover and you will see a union. The linkage rod is in two pieces held together by this union. The gear case cannot be removed without separating the linkage rod at this point. If it has stripped or loosened the linkage rod will not travel far enough to engage in either direction.
It's been a while but it seems to me both the shifter and the gear case have to be in neutral with the union loose. Once you establish that they are both in neutral, the union is tightened.
I had a 1974 Johnson 25 and experienced the same problem after replacing the water pump. When I put everything back together, the linkage was not adjusted properly and it would jump out of gear.
Hope this helps.

He had the water pump and a bunch of other work done 2 years ago, diffently gives me ideas to look at and start somewhere..... might be a backyard mechanic JOB! Just wish I could get someone with reasonable prices and who we could trust would not take us for a loop! or is it LOOT!

Make sure its not your sheer pin first....I would assume the mechanic would have checked that but I would take a loo anyway. It takes 1 min to check and if its that it will be a $5 fix.

WE emptied the bottom end yesterday and it was goldish yellow colour with traces of black in it. Going to put new oil in it this morning and try running it disconnected from the boat and hopefully it's just the wiring and not lower end problems.
