What is a good assault rifle for hunting?

I use this, it works well but does a number on a squirrel

doll... do you live in Canada or US?

They are only legal in the States for hunting. AR's, and AK's and all their look-alikes are deemed restricted (and real AK's are prohibitied) in Canada, and therefore cannot be used in any hunting situation. They must be kept in a safe, and when you want to use it, you must obtain a transport permit to bring them to and from the range directly... no stops or diversions. Ok in the States though as Landshark has stated. Hope this helps.

Hey,

try something by FN FAL or Heckler & Koch. Both make an assault style rifle in semi auto and in .308 calibre. Depends on what you're hunting, dude. AR makes one of the deadliest .223 rifles around.

the think the real question ought to be WHY? it is this kinda think that WILL give the anti's more ammunition (pun intended).. so why do we need Assault rifle look alikes in the field.. just my opinion C5

Im with you C5Fishing.
I think its ridiculous that someone would even consider hunting with a "assault rifle".
You wouldn't be in my camp for long with one.
Just my 2cents.

You can't hunt with an AR platform in Canada as it is Restricted. Same goes for the AK. But there are lots of other rifles out there that aren't Restricted that you can hunt with. Try the Robinson Arms XCR. It takes AR magazines and it is not restricted. So you can use it ti hunt legally.

They make a few black gun models now that are non restricted, but most are lighter calibers 223, 204 270 maybe a 308, I don't know if they go bigger or not, they look cool but if u can only have 4 in the clip is it nessary???

I'm not against them but I wouldn't go and buy one but I bet in the next 10years they get a lot more popular!!

An assult rifle and a hunting rifle are two different firearms designed for different purposes. Although I've seen black guns used down south for predator hunting, they arn't really designed for hunting. AK/AR platforms are made to provide reliable rapid fire to people in a gun fight. They are made to be light, fast, easy to maintain and many have customizable/adjustable stocks as the gun may have different users. They usually have high magazine capacities and often have folding/adjustable stocks that would not be practical in hunting.

In contrast a good hunting rifle is (or should be) bought to fit an individuals body size, as it will usually have one primary owner. Also the focus of a good hunting rifle is accuracy, not speed, as in most cases we are trying to achieve a one shot kill. Magazine capacity is usually limited to 5 rounds in most hunting rifles. If you haven't hit the prey by then, you won't. A good hunting rifle will have tighter manufacturing tolerances greater accuracy.

That being said, a well placed shot from any rifle of a high speed caliber will do the job. But if the purpose of the rifle is hunting I agree with C5, why would you want an assult rifle. Your Dad would be better served with a rifle built for the purpose of hunting.

i like the AR platform for a semi, i think it would be a great yote rifle in 223 or 243. really flat shooting guns. alot of guys in the states use them and love them.
