Just as a thought for you and only because you mentioned a meat backpack:
Strapping a quarter of a moose to a stretcher is a lot easier to get them out than on your back. We've taken a lot of moose out of the woods a lot of different ways miles from the nearest road and that is the best way we found (barring renting a helicopter). They also comes in handy for portaging outboards, barrel of water up to camp etc. You might want to consider getting one. We got both of ours from the army surplus store.
