Grizzly, I'm with you.

It is definitely a Barred Owl.

You're usually guaranteed to see one, if you go for a walk, on Lemoines Point, in Kingston.

Bye the way the fishing has been great, until yesterday. They kept coming in, but would not commit.

I've been out 19 times so far. Only saw you the one time.

Later,

A little research shows Mr. Audubon seems to agree with Merganzer, that it's a long-eared owl, but googled Horned owl as wel land it lookes close. Regardless, great pic Grizz, not to often you see them out in broad daylight like that. And right in the backyard no less, very neat.

Owls always remind me of grouse hunting on a point where I grew up. There were a pair of nesting owls, and you would be out there, slippin along the edge of the cottage road loooking for birds, when out of nowhere you would see a big shadow pass over you. Look up quick and you would see one. no sound though, they would pass right over your head and the wings would barely make a wisper. Cool birds.

Very cool pic, no question. I found a great horned owl on our old farm years ago and it couldn't fly. We figured it was just old age. I brought it back to the barn and had it as a pet for a couple of weeks. I fed it mice caught in traps and dogfood before it finally died. That's not a great horned owl.
Merganser has it right. It is a long eared owl. They grow to about 15" where great horned owls grow to about 24". Long eared owls have the vertical stripes on the belly you can see and the black directly around the eyes with the orange patch all around. Great horned have horizontal bars on the belly.
Barred owls don't have ear tufts.

Hey C5, I've been walking that point for grouse since I was old enogh to tote a 20 ga. single shot. Was a tradition to go out before Christmas, bring back a tree and hopefully a few birds. That, groundhog hunting and bass fishing occupied all my time until I was old enough to have wheels.

Ahhhh the good old days......
