So did anyone get out for the goose hunt on Saturday after all? I was skiing on Saturday but plan on getting out a couple of times this week after work. We'll see how it goes...

I finally got a chance to get out tonight but there were too many deer in the field and must have been scaring all the geese off.

Too bad about the deer. Where were they back in November?

I wish I had time to get out again this week but it doesn't look like I will.

There was about 20-30 deer. I had my two small boys with me and they thought it was pretty cool to see that many all together. I think the deer have eaten all the corn and the geese are in other fields in the area.
I wish I had more time to scout and beg permission.

Deer don't typically go kernal for kernal and geese don't care all that much either. I have set up in a completely snow covered field. If there are birds in you area that you can traffic, set some dekes and get hidden really well.

I'm hoping to try again and do just that.

The field is open for about 75 acres square and has rolling hills throughout. In the middle is a small dried out pond about 30 yards in diameter with lots of tall grass in it. Obviously that's a great place to hide, but I would have to coy them over close enough to that bit of cover. Most times they like the top of the hills and stay out in the open. That would put them 100 yards away from the pond.

Here's a question. Am I better off going high in the middle with no natural cover and become a lump of dirt and cornstalks out there, or sit nicely covered up in the pond grass and try to talk them over close enough...

Hard to say. Depends on how responsive the birds are to your calling and spread but most likely I'd be using layout blinds if you have them and setting up along the birds route of travel. The less distance you have to pull traffic birds, the more likely you are to get a chance at them. With crappier the weather, the better.

Yeah, and is often the case, I'll zig and they''ll zag, LOL. But it sure is fun when you do both zig at the same time.
