I was out turkey hunting last spring first light....I sat on the ground against a cedar tree..
4 inches across for a backrest....It was 5:30 am....the gobblers don't start gobbling until 5:40am....I didn't hear any then so I gave a few yelps on my slate call . It was just getting light. About 1 minute later I hear a noise to my left and immediately I feel a hard whack on my left shoulder and a coyote went whipping by me 100 miles an hour after unsuccessfully trying to put me down & out for a meal, he instantaneously made a U turn and disappeared over the knoll into the dogwood. It was over in 5 seconds. Now that is a once in a lifetime happening. The coyote was looking for a quick meal but he obviously picked on more than he could chew this time...coyotes luv wild turkeys(& camoclad hunters) ! Beware out there in the twilight for predators(including mountain lions)...

I usually carry quite a few calls with me like Slate , box and mouth calls. But my go to call 99% of the time is the mouth call. Some doubles but mainly triples and usually can go from there. Very versitile for tree calls , cutting , yelping and purring. And can control volume as well. Also very little movement. That is what tricks my turkey's.

Cool story Al! Musta got the heart beating pretty i imagine.

Myself, I use a Gobble Stalker slate call and a quaker boy diaphram. The slate call is awesome, and made by some guys out of port hope. Gave me a life time gaurantee and each one is handmade. Check out the site...got some pretty cool calls
