Trying to decide if I want to buy a Remington 597 or the Ruger 10/22. I am stuck on which one I want, and just curious as to what others think of these models.

I have a 10/22 and they are very reliable, accurate, and you can get a tonne of aftermarket accessories for it. That being said, I've heard nothing but good things about the Remington 597. Don't think you could go wrong either way. I suggest you go to a place that has both in stock and get your hands on them. Pick the one that feels the best and then shop around for the best price on it.

These are both good companies but everything I have read says 597....... because
they are more accurate( proved in testing not by me)LOL
they come with a longer stock which lead to more comfort.(to each their own)
They had a problem a few years ago with the plastic magazines but have fixed that with the metal verson and they also had problems with the ejector pins but have been able to get that fixed over the years by upgrading the metal and finish. Do not buy an older gun with the old ejectors or you will be upset really fast.
As fishboy said. Pick them both up and see which one fits you the best.
Accuracy is always questionable when it comes to semi's. If your looking for accuracy you will never beat a bolt.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have decided on the 597 as it is a bit lighter than the 10/22. This is a gun for my 12 year old daughter to start on targets and squirls with. I'm just going to shave have the stock shaved a bit to make it fit her

the 10/22 has been around 30 plus yeas and totally unchanged from its originol design fastest trouble free semi ive ever shouldered and super accurate for a 22 if you use high end loats like the CCI stingers

I won a Savage .17 cal HMR a few years ago. You might want to look at that instead of a .22. Faster, flatter, and longer range than a .22. Rounds are more expensive, however. I haven't picked up my .22 since I shot the .17.

Ruger also now offers a 10/22 compact, weighs only4.5 lb and has a 12-3/4'' length of pull, just right for a youth.

RUGER!!!
Look up reviews on the 597 some say they are having problem with the exctractor breaking!!Ruger has been around a long time and so many variations to buy!!!
Look up the SR22 Ruger (not for your daughter maybe) but a reliable accurate rifle as all the 10/22,s are!!!
