Spent the last week working from the cottage and managed to get out for a morning of shooting with Phil. He came up Tuesday night and we were loaded up and ready to get out in the morning.

We were up early and on the water bright at early. Despite being up early, it’s amazing how much two guys a dog and 100 dekes can weight down/slow down a boat. We found our blind just before legal light and scrambled to get them set. The water around the small rock island was a little deeper than expected so the decoys had to be placed relatively close to shore and we hoped a few birds would come to play.

It wasn’t long before we could see the black and white trading in the distance. After watching a pile of birds move to the back of the bay in the first hour Phil decided to take a quick boat tour to check out the possibility of moving. Well, no sooner had he started the motor when I had a lone buffy in the spread and before he was a few hundred yards away another pair set their wings and I dropped the pair.

The birds would start returning to our area in smaller groups, but again they wanted to be in the back of the bay. The frustration started setting in and he went for another boat ride, and just like the last time another few birds came in and I dropped 2 more buffies. It wasn’t long before I had finished up a limit of 5 buffies and a single goldeneye. He came back to the blind and had a few great opportunities and managed to capitalize of two more drake buffies before we had to call it a day.
