Hey folks,

Just wondering what the season is for antlered deer shedding their racks? When they shed and when they grow back?
Saw a nice buck this morning and the rack appeared to have a significant amount of "velvet/fur".

Cheers

The season for shedding typically begins in their winter home area in late December into mid February. There are of course earlier and later guys in the crowd, but that is the norm. As for starting to grow, I've seen bumps begin in April and usually are in full velvet by late August. The velvet begins to fall and be rubbed off in September and usually gone by the beginning of October. By the end of October they are in full shiny gear and looking their best for the ladies and ready to rumble in the rut. By the end of November they are battled scarred from the rut. Brings us back to December where they retreat to their winter homes, ready to start all over again.
Unless of course they end up on someone's dinner table...
