I don't smoke but the guys I hunt with do smoke quite a few while in their stands. Do you guys think smoking has any effect on the animals (scaring them off etc) Last year I shot a buck and doe and neither of the other guys even saw one. I've heard it doesn't have any effect on scaring them off but wonder what majority says?

The military teaches not to smoke when out on patrol etc., in theatre the smoke can be smelled at quite a distance down wind. The smokers I love are the ones that show up in $600 camo jacket, pants, boots, gloves and face paint, then rip open the Velcro pockets to get the smokes out. Placed properly in the woods these guys are useful, placed properly they will funnel the game right to u.
Cheers Robert

I don't smoke, but I have a buddy who flipped a cigarette out of his mouth when he released the string on his bow shooting a buck. I have heard a lot of stories similar where smoking has no effect. They call the smoke cover scent. I think those stories are due to the fact the deer was upwind, but maybe they are right.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have gone to the other extreme and stored my clothes in plastic bags after washing in scent eliminating detergents and dressed up only after I got out of the vehicle. Yet I was still scented when they got downwind. I guess I can't help but breathe.

I'll stick to the less scent is best, but I think the wind carrying scent and non natural sounds are bigger factors.

Smoking??? I hunt from a tree stand twenty feet up and hope they cant smell me!! I have had a number of deer walk under my stand and last year a moose and calf walked directly towards/under me and took no notice of my smoke odour. Make a noise and that changes everything.

I had to put a smoke out to shoot a deer early one morning. Was about 30 yards behind me before I saw her.

I have shot quite a few deer and smoke atleast 3 or 4 smokes in the am and in the pm when im hunting. I dont us a tree stand just a nice soft spot on the ground and a tree to lean on and i have have had deer walk 15 feet from me before i let the hammer down. i think they are curious about the smell and come check it out i seriously have shot more deer with a smoke in my mouth or in my hand then i have with out one i do not think it matters if you smoke or do not smoke on stand.

I agree that you can shoot a deer while smoking
but how many mature bucks are shot while smoking?
Its def a possibility but in most cases you aren't going to shoot a big buck
while hacking a dart. I personally dont know if the deer care or not
as Im not a scientist but to me its not worth it as I spend a lot of money
to go hunting and missing the deer of a lifetime for a smoke
Isnt worth it.

Well I guess you should keep smoking then as it seems to be working for you.

LOL Tinks "cigarette" scent will be on the market shortly. I was just curious who does smoke while hunting and what the odds are. Coyote hunting with a good friend 2 days ago I could smell his cigarette quite a ways away.
