Point of interest.
Just got a call from a cousin, who lives and hunts in northwestern Ontario. He was out hunting the
last 2 days with his bow in WMU5 and was able to call 5 different bulls to his stand to about 20 feet
No. bull tag. Rut is in full swing, cows, calves, and bulls all over the place. Hunting is on fire.
Finally walking back to the cabin, a cow comes ot of the bush, and stops broadside on the trail.
One arrow dropped her on the trail. For you hunters who got this

Doors, read the Hotline section pages 4 and 5. It basically tells us how the MNRF royally messed
Up their plan for better moose management, most of the cutbacks were not necessary.
Snow is forecast in the area for next week. I can hardly wait.

We were up last week and the rut finally just turned on for us on Oct 1st so it should be full swing now that I'm back home.

Buddy of mine shot a nice bull in the Geraldton area last thurs with his cross bow. Said rut was just starting there.................

Update to my buddy's bull.....................they were advised by the ministry to discard the entire animal. Was full of some parasite tape worm. It is not uncommon in moose but this one was infected by the thousands. Young bull maybe 3-3.5 yrs old. Have never heard of a moose being infected so badly. Has anyone else experienced or heard of such a thing??

That's too bad for your buddy.

I've seen moose die from being infested with ticks on the west side of Algonquin in the late 90's and I've heard bears get tapeworms bad, but never moose and tapeworms.

A friend of mines camp shot one a few years ago like that. Something didn't look right, called in the MNR, took em a couple days to get to camp. They tested the bull said it had a worm infection. Had to split the skull to find out. Wouldn't issue the guys another tag or let them keep the rack. Can't remember where they were hunting but it was in ont

If they split the skull, it was more likely a case of brainworm (moose illness) rather than tapeworm. This usually happens in areas where whitetails and moose areas overlap but the brainworm does not effect deer like it does moose.

We did not apply this year to area 5 as there was such a reduction in the tags issed.
Glad to here your brother in law bagged one.
Ya the weather I guess will be different than last year when we were up.

All we did was sun tan. LOL too hot and no movment of animals.
We did apply in area 49 where are deer camp is, a lot closer but still no tags.

The outfitters up there must be dieing because of the tag reductions.
I think area 5 last year gave out 360 adult tags and only 60 this year. That is why we did not bother.

Drive safe 17 can be a killer witht he snow if they get any.
