What are the differences between Gen 1 & Gen 2?

What will Gen 2 do that Gen1 won't ?

Can gen 1 units be networked with Gen 2 or the new touch units ?

I see the Gen 2 units are on sale at a lot of dealers is there anything coming that's worth waiting for?

The Gen1 units have a different processor in them which limits what they can do. Gen1 cannot display StructureMap or share Navionics charting over Ethernet.

Gen 1 can be networked with Gen 2 or Gen 2 Touch units.

There is nothing that has been officially announced yet on any new units coming for 2015.

I have a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 on my boat and the speed alone of the bigger processor in the Gen 2 is worth it for me. They are noticeably faster units.

Lawren,

Looking for some advice please. All my fishing is on Erie and 99% of the time I troll. I have am HDS 10 Gen 1 on my boat now and will be adding an HDS 8 Gen 2 before Spring. My plan is to link them both with an Ethernet cable, I want to use the 10 for sonar and side or down scanning when desired with a split screen. The 8 will be used strictly for GPS Charting and I'm getting an updated Navionics Hotmaps Platinum card which will be put in the 8. What do you think about this set-up? My running the card through the 8 will I be maximizing my options when it comes to charting and seeing the structure below and ahead of me? Appreciate your thoughts.

Ron

Hey Ron

Sounds like a great setup. I would do it just like you have decided to there. You'll maximize your sonar and GPS screen that way. The only thing I would do differently is get a chart that is better suited for Lake Erie. I'd recommend the Navionics+ card. Hotmaps Platinum is designed more for inland lakes and the last time I checked that card it did not have Lake Erie on it.

Thanks Lawren for agreeing with my set-up, good to know that we're on the same page!

I never checked out the Navionics + card and wonder if that is better than the Hotmaps Platinum???

Much better than the Hotmaps Platinum over all. This is the charting detail you will get on the Navionics+ http://navionics.com/en/webapp
