I'm looking at purchasing a used Humminbird 798ci SI HD COMBO. I'm hoping to get input from some owners about the good/bad/ugly on this unit. Also have a few questions I can't find answers to:

-does it have a flasher mode and can I buy an ice 'ducer for it?
-will this unit work with i-pilot? I have heard some of the 'birds with DI won't work with i-pilot
-is the transom mount sturdy? I have heard it's plastic and prone to breaking
-is there a factory reset function? I've been warned that if it is updated incorrectly it can be permanently destroyed.

thanks!

Yes it does have a flasher mode. Humminbird does not list a ice ducer that is compatable with the 798. You may want to call them to find out for sure though.

There is no problem using a SI or DI unit with iPilot. The problem that can occur is that the DI and SI will not work if you are using the universal sonar. You will need to mount an external transducer on the trolling motor for those functions.

The transom mounts are good and as long as they are not abused you should not have any problems when they are installed correctly.

There is a factory reset in the menu on the units and there is likely a hard reset too that Humminbird could provide you. These are generally a key sequence when powering on. Its extremely rare a unit has problems during an update when the instructions on how to update are followed.

Had the exact same unit on my old boat. Yes the mount was plastic and yes I broke it off and it was hard to get a replacement as they were on backorder. I'd suggest getting a backup to have handy. Other than that, I loved that unit. It did have a flasher mode but I rarely used it. Didn't have I-Pilot so can't answer that one. I found the side imaging pretty useless, but I was mainly out in Lake Erie and didnt need to see the boring bottom anyways.
