Quinte Fishing

Is it possible to burn out a transducer if accidently left turned on after a boat is removed from the water.
If damage can ocurr, any idea how long it would take.
Packed up in a hurry the last time out because we got caught in a storm. Two days later I noticed I had left it turned on.
Haven't been out since to see if it still works.

It is not good for it to do that, but most of us do it. I never would shut my front unit off when when the trolling motor was out of the water so add up all those times the transducer was shooting through the air over the course of a season.... I believe it has something to do with the resistance of water being more than air and therefore it will work much harder when its shooting through air and thus burn out quicker. If it was only on for a couple of days you'll probably be ok. I wouldn't worry to much about it at this point.

I have heard this claim before as well. I have always tried to turn off both my helm unit and my bow mount unit before leaving the water. Although over the years, I have had them on for about 45 minutes after coming out of the water. I have not noticed ANY change in either of my units. (I have owned 6 over the last 4 years) I think this may have been a preventative measure for some of the 80's and early 90's units. Even on my Vexilar Flasher, the owners manual instructs you to start learning how to use it at home, out of water.

I think it may have been similar to the statement "don't leave a battery on concrete. It will ruin it." This may have been true for older batteries, but new ones are not prone to this.

On the HDS you can leave everything on and you just shut down sonar so there is no signal at the ducer
