Both units are great buys as each unit will come with the Gold card for under $600. The Humminbird will have some things that the Lowrance won't and the Lowrance will have some features that the Humminbird won't. I'd say it comes down to personal preference more than anything.

Both units will also have conversion kits to allow you to use them on the ice. You'd be looking at around $200 for those kits which will include a carry bag, battery, charger, and ice transducer.

I have the HB 597 and love it. Haven't had a chance to use it on the ice yet, but it's a great unit for the softwater. Just picked up a second unit for another boat if that tells you anything.

Lawren - will the ice kit for the 597 include some kind of plastic "shuttle" to sit the head unit in?

What would the cone angles be on the 597 with the ice transducer? The compatible ice transducer says 9/20 model number, but the specs say Single/Dual Beam, 20/60 Degree, 200/83 kHz. Since the 597 operates at 200/455KHz does that mean the ice transducer with the 597 head would only give you a 60 cone? That's WAY too wide for me.

The XI 9 19 Transducer (doesn't state compatible with 597) says it's a single/Dual Beam. 9/19 Degree. 455/240kHz - since the 597 does 200/455KHz does that mean you would get a 9 degree cone when in 455KHz mode?
