can u link an old global maps 5600 to and HDS 7? When i purchased the boat it had a gm5600....the antenna didnt work.. i put a couple of hds units on. But i would like to hook up the old gm5600 so i dont have to split my screen on the 7. Wonder if i can link to the hds or hook up seperately and buy a new antenna. If i need to buy an antenna...is there one that is better ??

Double check what model you have because Lowrance never made a 5600. They have a 5300 5" color screen which can be networked, a 5500 5.5" color screen which could not be networked, and a 6500 7" color screen which could be networked with an adapter cable.

You're best bet would be to network it with your HDS (if possible) and use the HDS antenna. If you need any help with the networking cables let me know and I'll put together a list of what you'll need.

HHMMmm ya ...it is a 5500c. In that case i will need an antenna? The one on the boat was a 2000.

As long as the small connector on the back of the 5500 is a 5 pin blue one then you are able to network it with the HDS unit. You will need a NMEA2000 starter kit (if you don't have a network already), a T connector, a short extension cable to go from the T to a unit, and then a blue unit to red network adapter cable. You'll be looking at about $200 for all of those parts.

would it be easier to get a new antenna? is the external antenna more accurate than that of the internal hds?

It wouldn't make it any easier getting an external antenna because you will still need the NMEA2000 parts I mentioned. If you get the LGC-4000 then it that will be a better antenna than what is built into the HDS unit. It is a 5Hz GPS meaning it updates 5 times per second where the HDS is a 1Hz
