Hello
Iam debating btw the two. Right now the best deal seems to be the 688 w nav+ card. Is the 688 just a newer version of the 597 or is there added functionality as well?

The 688 is a newer unit than the 597. It's a new unit all together because of the screen size difference. The 688 has a 4.5" screen and the 597 has a 5" screen. Other than that the functionality is the same. The 688 with the Nav+ card is certainly the best deal right now in that size of Humminbird.

688 is only 4.5inch? All the info I have read on it says its a 5 inch.

My mistake. It is 5" however it isn't a square screen like the 597 but a vertical rectangular screen. I figured it was 4.5" like the older units with that shape screen. Til I got the measuring tape out!
