I've been looking closely at the new Garmin panoptixs technology and toying with the ideal of switching over. I've always been a lowrance guy but the potential with this new stuff is very teasing. Anyone else looking seriously at it?

I've been talking with Jeff. The challenge im having is trying to decide if the gain is worth it. I might have to wait till open water and go fishing with Jeff. Cool stuff for sure

I am in the same boat Dan (so to speak:))... always run Lowrance on the Ranger but it appears both Humminbird and Garmin have taken a step ahead.. my main concern is having to relearn the functionality.

I am certain that I do not get everything out of the Lowrances... switching to an alternate brand and having to relearn how to use the product may outweigh the advantages.

question is what is next for Lowrance

Dan you won't be disappointed with a Garmin! If you go that way the GT52HW CHIRP transducer is awesome for SideVu and DownVu. In my opinion Garmin has the best side and down on the market right now. Even the CHIRP sonar is amazing for dropshotting. The only down sides I found over my Lowrance unit was it wasn't as good in the sun (just had slightly more glare), and the Garmin menu is a little more involved to use than a Lowrance one. I don't mean its hard to use, but you just have to go deeper into the menu for certain items that should be closer up in my opinion. They also can't run Navionics which is their biggest short coming, but their mapping is improving and they actually have more small lakes covered than Navionics so they might be an advantage to some people.

As far as Panoptix goes it is a great technology that has its time and place. I find largemouth fishermen will benefit from the forward looking model more than the down, and the reverse for smallmouth fishermen. The PS21 is great for finding weed clumps on flats or just off the weedline. I found it works best on calmer days as you have to point the trolling motor at the object you want to look at. This can make boat control tricky on a rougher day. It works best in 10' or more but I have used it shallower with some success.

I have 3 Lowrance units on my console. All my dad had was a knotted anchor rope but he caught lots of fish.
