Interesting ....we have had this happen as well. I've got in the habit of pulling the line in hand over hand a few feet and then letting the the board stall. If there is a fish, you notice the stalled board shake. In the past I thought the pause may be triggering followers, but after reading this thread I wonder if they were already hooked and just swimming with the boat.
