Hey Guys, looking for some advice. Looking to upgrade my heavier rods to lighter rods this year to run off the planer boards. I was going to go with the 7'6" Okuma Blue Diamonds - medium/light action, but my buddy is trying to sway me to 8'6" Diawa Heartlands medium action. I fish Erie a lot so would want these for running 10 up to 40 jets and small dipseys off the board in the summer, but would also want to use them for running stickbaits for late fall Quinte fish.

Thanks for your input.

IMO, medium lights sling shot the boards in rough waters, I've been running 8'6" Blue Diamonds in Medium power/Fast action and they work awesome with boards

I run the blue diamonds also. Work very well. I also use the okuma convector gL dipsy rods as I double duty them for salmon in summer to run dipsys.

BigMac....do you use your dipsey rods for pullin boards?? I've got 2 8'6 dipsey rods (heavy) I've never used, and was thinking about using them this fall with my in-lines. I don't think it would matter for the boards, but it may take away a bit of the fun when fighting the fish.

I do use them for boards yes but i believe they are medium action 8'6. The action is great for fighting fish.

I mostly fish by myself so i don't like long rods. I found some 7'6 telescopic flippin rods with heavy action and fast tip and am very happy with them. I use the Diawa SG 17lc reels and put 30 lb fireline crystal as my main line and then 12 lb flouro leader. The fireline is visable from the boat and does not slip out of the boards in any weather....this set up works well for me.

I run both the ML blue diamonds and the M Heartlands. A third option would be the 7'6" ML heartland planer board rods which I also run. Both the ML 's struggle in big seas...that's when I run the M's and usually lots of leadcore. It sure is allot more fun for big fall eyes with the ML's when conditions allow though. On Erie I use the ML Blue diamonds off the riggers and run flatline's off the ML heartlands....and I use the M's off riggers for Salmon on Lake O. They're all good versatile rods under the right application.
