You dont really need to invest much to do it yourself. coat hanger, bead, eye screw and spring (variety pack from canadian tire) and you already have the flag. I did it to my boards and luv watching that flag drop

They can be nice for small walleye trolling and or fishing weedy areas. If you are thinking of getting them for the fall walleye, they arent needed.

it's not that hard to make your own tattle flags, and IMO the offshore company is hosing it's customers by charging so much for the flag kit, braid clip, etc...I'm no whiz with tools either, but my diy tattle flag works great. Here's the guide I followed:
http://perchjerker0.tripod.com/home%20made%20tattle%20flags.htm
You just need to buy some stainless steel wire (I'd say coat hanger might be too thick/difficult to work with), a screw, washer, and a variety of springs. It is much easier than you think and dirt cheap to diy.

You might have to experiment with springs, so buy a couple - some tight, some looser, you'll figure it out quick.

The spring steel wire used on a perch spreaders works well it is thin and very lite and moves very well when a small weed is picked up.

Don't worry about springs - use elastic bands.

Here's what we've done with ours

EASY PEASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not just set reel drags so that there is just enough drag to hold the board in place? As soon as a weed, fish, zebra gets onto the bait it will start pulling drag. Reels with a clicker make this dead simple, just listen for the clicker. Good thing is this works at night too.

That's exactly what I do, as I only run 1 board off each side, and it's hard to tell if it moves. Was worried about a light hookset though. Hooked into 3 fish just under 10 pounds last week, and not one of them moved the board, or pulled it down. As far as I could see anyways. None of them got off, so maybe it's alright.
