Hi Guys

Newbie and first time poster

I've read about concerns about swim bladder stress when bringing walleye out of "deeper" water. What would you consider the depth where this starts to be an issue. eg over 30' ,40' 50'? I also wonder if a fish rises out of deeper water to take your lure running at a "safe" depth (whatever that is) would that fish not have equalized its air bladder on the way up from the depths?

Thanks for any thoughts

Rick

A few years ago, we were using five colours of lead core and a Power Dive lure and we brought a fish up that was 40-45' down and its bladder was in its mouth - had to keep that one.

Since then, we have never fished deeper that 30' - most of the time a lot higher.

Even when trolling at 30 feet you may get the ofdd fish that has a blown up bladder. The one we caught tuesday was on a reef with braid so it shouldn't have been more than 30 feet down and the bladder was in it's mouth. If you get into riggers and dipsy's you will likely see a majority of the fish with the bladder in their throats. I think when you are fishing over 100+ feet of water it all depends on how far up the fish is coming to hit your lure. If it comes up from 60 feet to hit a lure at 30, probably gonna be a problem.

Do you think the ones that come up with their bladders in their mouths from 30 feet do this because maybe they shot up 30 feet to get the bait?

Fishing for deep smallies I know is different, but in tournament or even pleasure fishing when we bring them up we "fizz" them.
Fizzing is a how we release the bladder pressure, and has no ill effects on the fish as well as negates the "the bends and it's effects".
We insert a needle from a shringe about a half an inch back of the side fin by the gill plate on a 45 dg. angle towards the head until you hear a a light fizzing noise which is air being released from the bladder, and do both sides.
This technique has increased smallie mortality tremendously as they are a very fragile fish.
As for walleye find out where exactly the bladder is located and do the same, if in the mouth, well easy done, use a "small" needle point, and would reccomend doing this for fish that come from 20 or more feet.

This is not something that everyone should do, and certainly not without training and precision. There is considerable risk to fish with a misplaced syringe. Fizzing may be successful, where as the bladder has been deflated, but a punctured organ can be fatal or lead to secondary infection.

Here is an interesting read

Hey Rickydd1.....there's an interesting article about this topic on the second page of the Beg and Brag board, posted by West Lake Willows. Should answer some of your questions.
