I have a 2001 80HP Yamaha mounted on a 16' Aluminum LUND. I had a motor "problem" that required new wires installed. Keeping in mind that I bought this boat in May 2013, it is my first boat, I am sure it went faster pre-fire July 6, than it is now post fire September 10. The Tech that repaired it assures me that the max speed of this engine is 38 MPH but I am sure I had it over 40 MPH Canada Day Weekend on the Rideau.

Just looking for some experienced advice on whether or not I should expect any more out of this motor or is it fine the way it is and maybe it was just a fluke that I had it faster before the repair.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Not sure about wiring, u don't really state which wires burnt, plug ????, did u by any chance change the prop, way I understand it, faster out of the hole the slower the overall speed

I got a 60 hp yamaha 4 stroke on a 16.5' smokercraft by the boat's speed says 34 mph at 5600 rpm and gps says 35 mph,to me something don't sound right...but I'm no ace when it comes to motors, ran 30 hp tiller for years.

Much like some of the other fellas, I too can offer you a point of reference.

My 16.5 Legend with a 50 HP EFI Merc will do 33 MPH.

Items replaced:
1 - Wire harness
1 - Intake
1 - Intake Gasket
4 - O Ring
1 - Terminal Cover
8 - O Rings
4 - spark plugs

I returned the boat for a few days last week. They "sync'd" the carb. No change in props.

If you replace intake gasket, make sure it's not split or got a kink in it...had a snowmachine once ok on low end,but the upper end would suck air slow right down...just a thought :?

Don't forget the other factors that can significantly affect boat speed; wind, current, trim, # of people on board, level of gas etc.

I have a 150 Yamaha 4-stroke on an Alumacraft 185 Tournament Pro. Me and 1/4 tank of gas, 52mph. Me, a partner, full tank of gas 46-47mph. Up river on the French costs me 2mph roughly. You may have very well hit 40+mph a few years ago, and just have not been able to duplicate the same conditions since.

My old 17' Sylvan with a 90 Honda topped at about 40mph, 38mph with another guy on board.
