As summer winds down, and guys are starting to get their fall walleye trolling gear ready, I thought I'd post this tip for trolling in deep water.
According to the Precision Trolling Guide, attaching a 1 ounce Offshore Tackle snap weight 20 feet behind the lure will get you approx. 33% deeper. This theory is for deep diving crankbaits only.So for those crankbaits that will only dive down to the 17-20 foot mark, you should be able to get them down an extra 5 to 7 feet.
Looking forward to trying it out with the new Berkely Flicker Minnow...

Hope this helps!!!

I use the theory of putting it in front of the lure 50 ft then letting out another 50 ft to rod tip or outrigger board, 1 oz for 10 ft of desired depth; ie 3oz will lower 30 ft approx, guy that showed me called it the 50/50 guide and seems to work well,
Cheers Rob

Yes, the 50/50 method is in the precision trolling guide, but that theory is meant for shallow stickbaits or a worm harness. The theory mentioned above is for deep diving crankbaits.

If that is the case, how do u tie the weight on 20 feet behind the lure without ruining the action of the lure???

Not sure.... It's not my theory, and I didn't write the book. Just trying to pass on some info from the Bible. You're gonna have to ask Mark (Romanack) and the boys to get that answer....

I think what you're referring to is the 20 plus method. This is what Mark talks about in the book and the weight is 20 feet infront of the bait not behind it. Adding the 1oz snap weight like this acheives the 33% additional depth.

Oh, sorry about the confusion...lol I thought it was common knowledge that a snap weight clipped onto the mainline, not hanging off the back hook of the lure.... Yes, it is 20 feet in front of the lure, not behind....my apologies.

Tough crowd.... :P

A one ounce weight will do a great job on lighter lures and spinner rigs.

Lure ----20 feet------1oz weight-------------------Board------------------Rod

For every2 feet from the weight to the board, the lure will down one foot.

Therefore: 40 feet from weight to the board - lure is down 20 feet.

Easier to figure out and works just great.

Superdad... Is there not a maximum depth a 1 oz weight will lower to,

Lure.......20ft, 1oz weight.......100 ft, board ...........rod

Will the lure now be at 50 ft ??.
Cheers Rob

Another thing to remember when using snap weights (or any weight) on spinners or shallow cranks is that boat speed plays a huge role in depth of your lure. I think the only way you would get a 1 ounce weight any deeper than 20' is if you were drifting or anchored...
Same rule applies with trolling with a bottom bouncer....Rule of thumb is typically 1 ounce/10FOW at an average walleye trolling speed.

Hope this helps!!!

When trolling I try 1.6/1.8, if no hits I might up to 2.2, I only know and use the 50/50 method mentioned in a post above, which gives me the 1 oz = 10ft of depth. Now if I lose the 3 oz weight and only have a 1 oz weight on the boat can I put it 20 ft in front of the lure, then 60 ft of line to the board to get 30 ft of depth or does the 1 oz "max" out at a certain depth.
Cheers Rob
