Just starting to do some research on flashers and depth finders and need some help. Is the flasher sonar mode on a depth finder such as the Lawrence elite 4x the same function as an ice flasher?

Same function as on a flasher. The difference is in how the image is made.
A depthfinder creates it electronically and a flasher does it with a spinning wheel.

One thing to consider is the transducer angle on flashers is far less than that of traditional LCD sonar units like the Elite4x. Also, you'll notice the size of the transducer diameter on the flashers is much larger than a traditional sonar unit. This helps optimize the transducers receive signal for ice fishing.

Both flasher and graph are great tools to have and any sonar is better than no sonar. I have found when I have the graph type out on the ice I always use the full sonar chart rather than the flasher.
