flasher tips

i just got my first flasher the other day (vex fl8se) just wondering if you guys have some tips about using a flasher,things to look for ect..any input you have may help. just want to be ready when the ice hits quinte

They're pretty basic. If fishing shallow water...Quinte, Kawarthas etc...go with the wide beam. Set the sensitivity high enough so you can see your lure moving up and down as you jig it. If you see any other line or movement on the screen, it's a fish. The bigger the mark is, the bigger the fish, or the fish is close. Not sure if the Vex has bottom zoom, but if it does, experiment with it. You may see the bottom "grow" on zoom mode, meaning there may be fish hugging the bottom. I believe most people will say keep your lure above the fish. If a fish comes on the screen, play with it, and see if you can get it to chase.
There are a lot more experienced ice fisherman on the board than myself, so hopefully if they have something to add, they will.

there is some ol guy that spends 60 days on the bay and fishes every day.maybe you can hook up with him and he can show you the ropes.his name is walleye dreamer send him a message and he would be happy to fish with you someday. i use a vex myself.

congrats king, a flasher is a great ice fishing tool! You can read lots of tips and watch lots of videos, but honestly once you take it out on the ice for the first time you will have it figured out pretty quick. Like others said dial back the gain till you can JUST see your jig. Big red mark=big/close fish, small green=bait or far away. I like to run my bait away from fish as the come in unless they aren't biting that day. You will figure out what the want by how they react on the screen. Narrow cone for deep water/drop off ledges, wide for shallow water/flats. Vex makes a great flasher, enjoy!

Thanks for the tips boys, i have watched some videos on youtube and i think i an ready to give it a go.... As soon as we get some ice :lol:

I agree with everyones tips so far on this thread. I would just like to add that it might be a good idea to cut another hole just beside the hole you plan on jigging in. One for the transducer and one for the trophy fish that you may get. Its not fun when the fish start headshaking at the hole and smacking your ducer all over the place.

Here is a tip. Use electrical tape and between the top of the transducer and the cord, tape it up so there isn't stress from picking up on the cord. This will save you pulled wires out of the transducer

I haven't ice fished for 20 years but over time have owned many many depthsounders. My first one probably 35 or more years ago was a FL8 flasher at the time made by Sitex . Funny that with all the advances in electronics over the years the old spinning wheel flasher still hangs in there.
The first one I remember brought to market was the Green Box by Lowrance but before that my buddy had one from Heathkit that you had to assemble yourself. What I don't understand is why you can buy a 40 inch TV for $250 but a 10 inch depthfinder costs $2500.
