They're pretty basic. If fishing shallow water...Quinte, Kawarthas etc...go with the wide beam. Set the sensitivity high enough so you can see your lure moving up and down as you jig it. If you see any other line or movement on the screen, it's a fish. The bigger the mark is, the bigger the fish, or the fish is close. Not sure if the Vex has bottom zoom, but if it does, experiment with it. You may see the bottom "grow" on zoom mode, meaning there may be fish hugging the bottom. I believe most people will say keep your lure above the fish. If a fish comes on the screen, play with it, and see if you can get it to chase.
There are a lot more experienced ice fisherman on the board than myself, so hopefully if they have something to add, they will.
