Just wondering if anyone knows what the laws are regarding snowmobiles and what you need (if anything) to take one ice fishing out on the bay.

Thanks guys.
I wasn't sure about the insurance part as it is not on a trail system or on a road. I was thinking riding a snowmobile strictly on a lake might be like a boat where you don't need insurance to drive.

I believe you need at least liability insurance. In case you do damage to others. I don't think it's mandatory for boats, but I think most people have it. Most tournaments on softwater will not let you enter unless you have liability insurance on your boat.
There were posts on here last year about the same topic.

You do need insurance on hard water, also the MNR have the same power as the OPP as far as enforcing the laws with vehicles on the water. It's not like the good ol days when you could drive anything around out there care free

So it's not like the good ole days when my Dad trailered up his '69 Johnson sled and I packed up my '83 three wheeler and away we went ice fishing where we wanted... no insurance, no worries. Figured as much.

I haven't had a sled in years now and had an older one given to me last year. I thought I might take it out ice fishing. Guess I'll stick with taking the insured and licensed 4-wheeler ice fishing and beat the tar out of the sled in the back forty then.
