This might sound like ranting but here it goes.

Bought a Jiffy 60i a few years back. Used it 3 times over 3 years because my buddy has an auger which we use mostly.

To start off, this thing requires a dozen pulls to get it to show any signs of life with and without choke. Once it does show signs of coming to life it still requires another dozen pulls alternating between choke and no choke etc... I pride myself on being able to get almost all 2 strokes to start so I'm very familiar with 2 stroke starting procedure.

First trip - Plastic pull handle broke after 2 or 3 pulls. had to tie it to a stick to get the thing started. No biggie bought a new handle and replace it.
Second trip - exhaust tip broke off. Cheap bent metal.
Third trip - plastic casing for the air filter cracked. Not from dropping it but holding onto it while priming the bulb which is really stiff.

Got it ready today to go out this weekend and now the thing won't shut off. Had to pull the spark plug and of course without gloves so got a nice little wake-up :-).

Made in America is not what it use to be I guess.

My buddies has 20 year old jiffy that runs like a champ, all beat up but starts on a couple of pulls and has mostly metal parts.

Since this is the fourth year no warranty. Might get another one, anyone have better experience with other brands i.e. Eskimo?

If you are looking for a replacement for your Jiffy, why not go with the ION Auger. It's battery operated, cuts about 40 holes through two feet of ice on a single charge and avoids the use of fuels that can contaminate your hands and then your bait...

I bought one at the end of the season last year and it has out-performed my expectations. It cuts through ice like my Nils. :D

They are on sale this week at CDN Tire for $499.99 (reg. $549.99)

Good luck.

Husqvarna makes a nice one, harder to find, and they are not as affordable as some other brands.
Kijiji Ont often has used ice augers, sometimes new ones......may be worth a look 8O

Do not know anything good or bad about the ION but my Strikemaster Electric is 7 yrs. old and runs like a charm. Good for 40 plus holes per outing, has a auto 12 volt hookup for bikes, and autos. Never an issue, this year I may have to replace the battery and last checked it was $35.00. No gas no mess no noise.

I've got a 20 year old (?) jiffy arctic blast. She's not pretty but has never let me down. Put a new blade on er a few years back and cuts through anything. Let a "buddy" borrow it and it went for a tour across the ice after he hit a pressure crack doing mach chicken. Didn't do a darn thing to it. Everything is metal. I put it in the shed at the end of the season last year with some stabilizer in the go juice and it started two pulls for me at the beginning of this season. There is one on Kijiji for $100 right now. Looks like its been through a war (just like mine) but don't judge it by the paint job!

I use a hand auger with an adapter I spun on the lathe at work with an 18 volt ridgid hand drill - work awesome ! Would recommend this method to anyone. You can buy adapters at Canadian tire for about $10 .

The reason I bought a Jiffy because almost all the ones I see people use are ancient and they run like a champ. Figured over the years Jiffy would've improved in quality. I guess I'm wrong.

Battery technology has come a long way and its time to look at something more environmentally friendly.

The hand auger with cordless drill is a very good idea. I'll have to look into it and give it a shot. I have a Ridig drill which I bring it with me for the ice anchors anyways.

Buddy of mine just bought a 10" jiffy stx?? I think...........like a hot knife thru butter. Very impressive to say the least. I think my old jiffy works ok but not even in same snack category compared to his new one. The torque and speed his new one cuts has me wanting a new one!!
