Was looking to get some type of flasher or fish finder to help out on BOQ. What brand or style does everyone recommend? Could I use a humminbird fish/depth finder? Thanks

I use the lowrance X67 ice machine. It's one of the first ice oriented finders & I love it. I've been using it for 8 years or so. I prefer it over a flasher because you can see the 'history' of your baits movement before a fish showed up. It does have a flasher mode too but I never use it. The only time it becomes an issue is in really deep water when others are fishing near you...if they are using the same frequency transducer you can get interference. Some of the newer finders have dual frequencies so you can change it up if this happens. To be fair though it only happened when fishing whitefish in 90' of water.

Tight lines

I have the same fishfinder. I haven't used it enough to totally get the most out of it. There use to be a DVD out on it to learn everything about it but I don't think they make it anymore.

i use a lowrance hds 5. it has an ice fishing mode and is very sensitive. I have a swivel on my line 2 ft up from my bait and i can see that tiny swivel clear as day on my unit. the gps feature is also handy to get you back to the exact spot on the ice and with a good map chip you can look for structure spots to fish.

Good luck.

I use a Hummminbird Ice 55.... I think they are all good to be honest. I do like the new Marcum LX-9, maybe next year though!!! The Vexilar's look really good too.

Have to agree with Steelhead...

I have a Lowrance M68C GPS model with flasher feature. Was on my boat but during a Jan fishing trip on the BOQ hit a piece of ice and the transducer ended up in my bro's lap. So converted it to a ice fishing system by buying the ice transducer and a rechargeable 6v battery from the electronic store.
Worked great until I started to use my buddies FL20 which is more detailed and stable (bottom on the Lowrance kept moving/changing depth). Over the years I've learned to use it but there is always that doubt when the bottom moves on the flasher, it the flasher bug or fish... With the FL20 there is no doubt when there is a fish on the bottom.

So just bought myself a LX-5 and which some say is better than a FL20 (arguably). So will be testing it out for the first time this weekend :D. Still might bring the M68C because it has GPS and I have some waypoints already marked on it.

I use the Vex fl8 and love it. I would like to try out the fl20 or 18 as I hear they have a zoom for the bottom 6' or so.
Mine will mark the walleye just fine, but would love to see the differance.

If you have a newer Humminbird finder then yes you can use it, you can get the ice ducer for it and then you just need a battery for it and a base to put it in. http://ca.humminbird.com/products/314001/XI_9_20 Sail in Oshawa has them in stock all year long.

I have a Vexilar Fl-18 Ultra Pack.

Works great! I too (like Dan) can see my swivel clear as day.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Just want to let everyone know my recent experience with Marcum support.

Bought a LX-5 and paid cash to hide the purchase from the wife, also hid the receipt.

Used it for the first time last weekend and discovered two of the buttons don't work. There was no physical signs that they are broken but they just don't work. Very disappointed that a brand new unit is broken out of the box. So been digging for my receipt for a few days and let me tell you it was well hidden, so well in fact I can't find it.
Called Marcum today and explained the situation, they immediately responded to send the unit back and they'll fix or replace it and provided a RMA# for warranty repair/replacement. I reiterated that I do not have the receipt and they responded that's not a problem unless there are physical signs of abuse because they stand behind their products and the buttons shouldn't break.

BTW, they also mentioned they can get the unit back to me in 4-5 days once they receive it. That's what I call service!

They all work great but imo marcum offers the best base model with 1000w peak to peak, bottom zoom and a nice soft case all for $299.
