This may seem like an odd question but what is the best way to bring your catch home. I have about a two and a half hour drive home, should I filet the fish on the ice or pack them in a cooler and filet them at home. Usually I fish on a lake that my camp is on or a back lake that is a short drive ( less than a half hour ). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I live 1.5 hr away and I just toss my fish in truck box and fillet them when I get home. I find that easier and warmer.

I usually just throw them in a garbage bag...then a cooler with ice....filet them when I get home, or the motel room if I stay the night

If you are fileting them at home later bleed them right after catching them. Just slit their gills right after catching them. They will bleed out pretty good. Sounds barbaric but drastically reduces the mess of fileting later and I find improves the taste of the meat.

Bleeding out the fish definatly makes the fish taste better. I try to bleed them into my hole I am fishing in so the water dilutes the blood, or directly into the garbage bag. That way your not leaving blood all over the ice, for the scavengers to see and come fish your spots!

Question about the best way to bleed a fish out? Do you club them first? Just curious.

Warmer to fillet them at home however I find the flesh looses it dexterity and taste when you freeze thaw and eat or freeze thaw and freeze. I always prefer filleting them fresh then freeze them. Meat tastes better and doesn't get mushy.

Do you filet them on the ice? if so what do you do with the waste?
