Any tips for spinning reels for ice fishing?

werks find in shack, as soon as they get cold, drag's shot

some of the reels it's a pita to get open to exchange OEM grease with a ligher oil to help with freeze up - any tips? and thanks

I have a shimano that I got in a clearance sale at a tackle store. It's a nice little reel but it is a hydraulic drag system. I can only use it on warm days or in the ice hut. Check the drag to see if it is a hydraulic type. If it is. You are pretty well up *** creek

Might need to upgrade the reel, unless you are dunking the reel in the slush and water the drag shouldn't freeze.

Have you tried bringing it in the house, taking the spool off and really letting it dry out near a heater for a few days?? Otherwise it may need a good servicing from Shimano directly.... I run 4 Stradic's on my ice rods, 2 2500 FJ's and 2 Ci4 2500's.... I leave them in my hut stored in the garage in below freezing temps all season, no issues at all...

This might be a stupid question, but are you sure its the drag? Are you using braid? If so maybe it is slipping on the reel and it just seems like the drag. If it is happening on all of them, maybe its how you spooled the line>?

Exactly what I was thinking nwillz. Sometimes if you don't use a mono backer, it will slip on the spool under weight

I had this happen to me years ago with the braid spinning around on the spool. Not on my ice rods, but same scenario.... As Landshark mentioned, a mono backing will stop that problem, but now I just put a piece of electrical tape around the spool after you tie your knot. It'll stop the braid from spinning around on the spool, and also give it something to dig into when putting new line on.
Hopefully that's what the problem is, and you don't have to buy new reels. Braid seems to have a lot of issues when it's cold...lol

Again only happens when reals are either cold or line is wet

The braid may get more slippery if it absorbs water then freezes.

Just tie on a few feet on mono then connect mono to braid everyones happy !!!

I have always put black tape a wrap or two over my knot to the spool have done this for many years starting with spider wire to power pro and last couple years suffix braids and have never had a problem since the first time that caused me to use the black tape in the first place. Have even let whole spool out under tension and reeled back in with out slippage. Real or reel easy fix for me .

dry them out & switch to ice mono had same problem braided line gets water logged nothing but problems alot of swearing

Nanofil probably isn't the best choice for ice fishing. It's small diameter and slipperiness make it cast a country mile, but for those same reasons it's hard to tie a good knot...you need to use a no-slip knot...and I don't think that there are any advantages that outweigh the costs.
