Well it was a great weekend at Merland Park. 23 showed up and 8 cancelled last minute due to the storm rolling through on Friday. The fish were on and everyone I spoke with caught fish. Kevin and Jennifer did a great job with the fish fry and moose chili. As for the fishing, we boated 14 fish. All were between 7 to 12lbs. During the day the hot crank was the storm Thundercrank and at night the HJ14-clown. On sunday we woke to a bone chilling -10 with wind chill -17 so we decided to call it and head home.
Merland Park was a great host and I know everyone was very impressed with them. Thanks Kevin and Jennifer !!

Thanks to Superdad, who showed up with a bag full of Uzick spinners complete with rigging instructions and left them for Kevin and Jennifer to pass out as draw prizes. The big fish was 12.12lbs.

See you all next year.

Dan,

I guess my 13.3 won't count in the Big fish thing. LOL

Great job by the Hosts.

I agree with Danny's comment re: the weekend together at Merland Park. I would like to add an interesting story to his report. Someone caught a seagull with his fishing pole using a HJ-14. It was caught on film. Should we ask Kevin and Jennifer to add a new contest next year -"the biggest seagull"?

Geez I thought the big fish of the Merland Park fishing weekend was the mysterious 13.5lber not the dead old 12.12

The biggest fish caught on the weekend at Merland was 13.5. It was caught by Ken Parkhurst just out from Merland Park around 7:00 PM. The fish was brought in right away, weighed and measured and then let go at the dock. Ken will be sending the pictures soon! I'll let Ken tell the rest.

When Ken P and I came in with the 13.5 lb fish no one was around the docks. The reason we came in right away was to get the fish verified. Given it was advertised as a live release derby we wanted to make sure the fish did not die. Not that we would have kept one that big to eat anyway. We were lucky that Jeff from cottage 5 did come by and see the fish and our measuring of it. He then watched us let the fish go at the dock.

Maybe a sugestion for next year would be to have something setup so all fish can be verified. Perhaps someone in one of the cottages that's not fishing (a spouse maybe?) who could watch as the fish are weighed, and perhaps take a picture of each fish. A quick one page agenda and rules would not hurt either.

Ken's got the pictures of the 13.5 lb fish and he's sending them to Kevin or Dan??

Fish on....

Well said Ken, I agree a little more rule structure goes a long way. I know
Jeff, he as honest as the day is long (when he's sober that is) and if Jeff saw that big Walleye heck that's good enough for me. I also think that
in lieu of the fact that Ken got the big cash prize he should be showing up at the Musky Mansion next spring with a round of cocktails ! Jeff will be there too. A good winter to both Ken's, it was nice to meet you both.
Salute from Quebec !

:D Gentlemen....As promised please find attached pictures of the 13 lb 5 oz eye caught during the weekend festivities at Merland Park this past weekend...(Note dimensions of fish were 31" long by 19" girth.) Given the weather conditions and all our hosts Jennifer and Kevin Lavers put on a great weekend. Now that my fishin partner and I have one annual under our belt we will have a better idea of how things are organized for next year. As for the fish, she was caught around 7pm Saturday evening just outside of Merland's Resort in 22' of water. The lure of choice was a Bagleys db06 crankbait in firetiger. This particular lure had seen the water already a fair bit this fall in the Honey Harbour area fishing for muskie. I must say however it was no where near as successful as it was for the giant eyes of Quinte. What they say is definately true...." BIG lure...BIG fish ". Two other fish were taken by the Bagley soon after between the hours of 7pm and 10pm, both over 10 lbs.
In addition to the deserving thanks to our host and hostess I would also like to pass on best wishes to Dan Elliot for his work on this website, my fishing partner Ken who drove the boat 96% of the weekend, Jeff Cross from cottage 5 who fortunantley was on land when we came in to measure out fish and of course my spouse Valerie who let get me get away this fall for 3, 3day fishing adventures.
Good to meet you all. May you have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Ken Parkhurst
ps...In the event I am not successful transmitting pictures I will sent them directly to Dan for posting.

A Late post but a great weekend all around. My neighbour in Trenton thought I was crazy pulling out the boat while he was snowplowing his driveway but, I am crazy. Our cabin 5 did well, 7 fish over 10 lbs but I must admit, my buddies from Quebec caught most of them. My Thundercraft's trim froze up Friday night keeping us close at bay. My buddy Jeff did witness Ken's 13.5 lb fish and actually took the picture for them, congrats on a nice fish Ken!! Thanks to Kevin & Jennifer for the great hospitality and we look forward to be back opening weekend. Sorry we missed meeting everybody at the fish fry, we thought it was supper, not lunch. It was nice meeting you Dan friday night at the dock and thanks for taking our pictures of the 3 fish. On Sunday we ran into a chap (I forget his name) from Ontario Outdoors Magazine at the ramp and he took some pictures of Jeff & I holding up an 11.7 lber. He was going out with Kevin for a fish and said he would try and get our pictures in an upcoming edition. Keep an eye out for the article and the pictures. See y'all in the spring if not out on the ice. Pat Heaney
