I totally empathize with Fishn Magician on this one. I am one that hates to see traditions lost in this rush to public safety. The lawyers are unfortunately winning.
I do see the side from QW Parks and Rec. I can just imagine what those grounds would look like especially if we get a late spring and the ground is very soft.
However, if I was serious about winning this derby an/or I wanted to put a lot of fish in the boat, I'm not sure Quinte West is where I would start.
If I had a good craft and was serious, I would be heading to Adolphus Reach-Picton Bay-Hay Bay-Long Reach and trying those areas.
I understand it's tradition for most of the QW campers and hey, who doesn't want a free place to set up especially where you might get free hydro.
If I read that right, you could park a camper there for a span of three weeks. Was that the case pervious? Did you get free hydro for three weeks before? If so, wow, i"m not surprised to see Council pull the plug on this.....

I raised and stressed the point about a prize for the kids that weighed in last year. Is it actually going to happen? That would be pretty sweet! The kids will be thrilled. I know I would have been at that age! Do what ya can to close that deal for sure!

Jason, don't take this personally, if there was better reporting and SUPPORT in the County, you would know where the winning fish have been caught in the recent years. Right here in County waters!!!

I'm pretty sure Marco Mcrae had a pretty big spread on the front page of the sports when he won the derby in 2012 and it was reported he caught the winner near Glenora Marina so it has been reported. I didn't cover the Derby last year as it wasn't my weekend.
I agree with what you are saying and that's why I said PICTON BAY. Long reach, Adolphus Reach, that's all County Waters to me.
And, yes, a tagged fish was caught in West Lake two or three years ago and I'm sure it was reported. If you are looking to get a tagged fish, your best odds are good old West Lake.

I'm presuming you will have a weigh station again this year?

People park their trailers down there 2 weeks before to ensure they get their spot. Most of us have been in the same spot for years! So our spot is usually there untouched haha. Power isn't used until the Friday usually. Then come Monday/Tuesday all is back to normal. With the exception of a few tire ruts everything looks the same. For the most part garbage is taken care of very well too. I can only begin to imagine what it will look like this year. All the trailers will be in parking lots...all the vehicles coming and going will now park on the grass...I'd rather have it the other way around!

Parksy, I have to agree that it is unfortunate that traditions are lost. However, the "rush to public safety" is a matter that is more than just "winning lawyers". The problem as I see it is, human beings can't seem to self regulate. Instead of noticing that the way they are behaving is putting others at risk, some continue with actions and behaviours that are dangerous for their neighbours. Even if being dangerous was completely unintended. Therefore you have a situation that for what ever reason has become a serious concern for the safety of people who are using public lands. In most cases it takes a serious injury or death to change actions. But, unfortunately again, most times that won't even change folks and "the man" has to step in and make laws or rules that restrict the use for everyone.

I for one hate that in Canada we are regulated to death and utterly every action is regulated by "the man." But I can also see why it is now like this. People can't be trusted to ensure their own safety or the safety of others. Heck, they can't even be trusted to take their garbage with them when they go fishing on public waters/ice.

I am upset as well and I have been emailing them too. It the city nt the derby people. It sucks. Been going to the same spot or over twenty years. And yes we are one of those people that bring our trailer down two weeks before the derby. It is going to be interesting. Not sure if we will even camp :(/(/(. I guess. We have to blame it on the awesome ice fishing season :):):)))))))))

You make excellent points. There has been a shift in social responsibility and that's the crux of the issue. This loss of common sense and being a good nieghbour has led itself to a litigious society. Maybe that's the byproduct of the social degradation.

When is Kiwanis going to post this to their page. Because unless you are apart of this forum you may not even know about changes to the camping. And is their a size limit to th camping. Because my trailer is only 18 feet. And it doesn't make ruts. And if we can camp on the grass in Tents. Are tent trailers acceptable on the grass. And they are asking not telling.

Please contact the City of Quinte West with your questions but seeing as how its still a trailer with wheels it will likely not be welcome on the grassed areas.

Ok awesome. Now let's get past this. I am annoyed too but this is a great event and a fun family weekend. Maybe next year we won't have much snow and things will go back to normal. However then we will be bitching about no ice fishing :):):)): We may just have to tent it if we want to be close to our stuff :)

I have a meeting on Friday March 28 at 2pm at city hall regarding the camping at centennial park. Anyone else is welcome to come voice your opinion and let's get this back to the way it was!

So funny story last night I was talking with someone from the city and they made it sound like this was not coming from the city about the camping changes.
