Headed out on the Bay today for a perch fish and to check and see how the ice was doing. I found 36"of half white, half black ice. Depressing to say the least. I had to extend the auger handle to finish the hole. At this rate we will be lucky to have boats in by May.

It is gonna be a while yet but I have no worries that we will not be ice fishing on opening weekend. Even back 20 yers ago, which was when we had the last coldest winter, opening weekend came and we all launched our boats.

Would a colder Spring result in the fish(the Big female Walleye) hanging around a little longer?

Yup it's all based on spawn. They spawn based on water temp so colder water means the spawn will be later and likely bigger fish still in bay for opener. Some maybe still prespawn also

Maybe...But I remember a couple of years back the ice and snow melt was so bad that the Moira was simply too deep and they couldn't get near it...Had to use weighted trebles and that didn't catch much. Here's hoping...

Good call parksy. Hopefully there is a significant amount of snow to melt up north and come down through the tribs. Def no lack of ice lol
