Just a heads up - heard on the radio this morning that a coast guard ice breaker is leaving from Brockville tommorow morning and breaking up the ice from Brockville to picton harbour. They warned to get off the ice if you see the ship.

Anyone ever seen this before while ice fishing? I'm wondering if it's safe to be far away on the ice near shore if the ice breaker is way off in the distance or if there's a danger of thick ice breaking far away due to pressures from the ice breaker :?: I will be on the river this weekend and don't want to go swimming 8O

good to know. I will be out off Amherst tomorrow. I imagine it will take awhile for him to get there. There is still about 2 feet of ice in the north channel

I just got an email back from DFO:
We are unable to provide an exact time when an icebreaker will be going through a specific area. Icebreaking operations can take longer in some areas, less in others. At this point, it is unlikely that an icebreaker will be in your area on March 22nd, if the location you referred to is West of Kingston and South of Odessa/Greater Napanee.

However, as plans can and do change, we advise that if you see an icebreaker in the vicinity, regardless of the distance from your location, you should be prepared to leave the area immediately. The ice may move or break apart even at a significant distance. All personal property and equipment should also be removed well ahead of the planned dates. Anyone on the ice when an icebreaker appears, should leave the ice surface immediately.

Its not a nice feeling being on the ice when the breaker is going by.. Did it about a few years back near Morrisburg.. Really wished we had gotten off the ice early instead of running off scared to dearh when they passed..

As for the breaker this year, it has yet to pass Prescott that I have seen.. Looks like they opened the small passage in the ice boom for when it gets here, but no breaker yet..

There is a breaker moored at Johnstown this morning (5:15am) Not sure if its the Martha Black or not, but she was working her way up river from Montreal yesterday..

Its the Pierre Radisson.. Still moored waiting for the ice boom to be lifted at Prescott before they can move upriver. I asked about a possible run into the Finkles ramp for us, and they got a good chuckle out of it :D

The Radisson is just about to enter Erie now on its way to Thunder Bay. According to the schedule of the ship it is escorting, they are expecting to be there by the end of the month. That looks like it has some MAJOR ice breaking to do over the next 5 days.

Ya thats a lot of ice to chew in 5 days for sure.. Its weird that their marine tracking system didn't update until they checked in with Clayton NY's marine station yesterday. They sat here in Johnstown for a while and Marine Traffic didn't show the boat here.
