Quinte Fishing

Hey Guys,

As you guys may or may not know here in Canada we are now able to view all Canadian charts (even with the sonar charts layer) on line for free at http://www.navionics.com/en/webapp. The depth units are displayed in meters though. I was talking with Navionics today and it is an easy change for them to make the units displayed as feet. I told them I would take a few polls to get an idea of what the general fishing public wanted. Please take the 5 seconds to leave your opinion on which units you prefer when looking at charts. Thank you.

Funny how we are a metric country but still use Imperial. I find I switch back and forth between the two for different units of measure. Depth of water in feet, distance between points in km, fish length in inches, fish weight in pounds, volume of fluids in liters...

I'd be curious to see how the age of people uses the different systems.
50 yrs+ use more Imperial
35-50 use both equally (I fall in there)
34 and under use more metric???

34 and under here, water depth has always been in feet, metres is Greek to me. Distance is m/km. use litres for gas and inches for only measuring fish.

35-50 for me...I use both. When fishing in a zone where there is a slot or regulation on length, I use metric for measuring. I find it's more accurate, and I have yet to see a measuring tape that reads with decimal points....If I'm just measuring for fun, where length isn't an issue in the regs, I'll use inches.

When I was talking to the Navionics rep he says "what are you talking about its in feet". I say "look I'm staring at my screen now..it's in meters". We share a few screen grabs back and forth while we are on the phone. Turns out it is tied to your IP address. If your in Canada looking at Canadian maps it's in meters. If your in the USA looking at Canadian maps you would see it in feet.

So far it is overwhelming support to view depth in feet. I've forwarded that on to Navionics and we will see if they change it for us.

at least its not nautical measurements, we have all learned meters in school, and other then being a pain can figure it out.

This may put me in the Dino age but we did not all learn metric in school. I learned metric on the job as all the Manuel's and code books changed all their measurements into metric, some of us had to be dragged into it.

I'm 46 and do the same; hate seeing metres and kilograms. It is easier to visualise a depth of 3 feet than 1 metre, if it is 4 feet - then maps round it off to 1 metre. it is the opposite for cms vs inches; I prefer to catch a 30 inch pike than 76 cms, I'm 5' 9" and don't think I'm 175 cm!

Finished school in 77 and never did any metric, in 88/89 the federal gov issued metric tools to our military tool box,s for the army, not sure when Air Force or navy got theirs.

I started learning metric in 1978 (Grade 3). It was also the first time I was whacked with a meter stick instead of a yard stick. Both felt about the same as I recall.
