I had read about the 'invasive' swans on the weekend, they could be a LOT of trouble in the future.

Has anyone seen the numbers of these creatures that stay in the area over the winter????

These are a few close to the dock in Wellington.

There is a program on the Fishing Network about invasive species in the Great Lakes and we will never see what the lakes were like as the changes are permanent.

I think those carp could be a problem for the future.

Just my .02.

Is there a swan hunting season? People eat them in the UK and apparently their delicious.... I saying if we are already being infiltrated with invasives, and if they are edible, why not just tell people to eat them? I understand this is happening in the southern states that have an asian carp problem and again the fish is considered to be great table fare...

If these things have been flying around north america for 130+ years, why, might I ask have they become a probelm all of a sudden? And why are we still worrying about putting money into invasives? Everyone freaks out everytime there is somethign new introduced, when was the last time that Eff'ed everything up to the point it was unsalvageable. We freak, pump money into getting rid of the problem and they never disapear they just blend in and our native specied adapt, life goes on.

Swans don't eat our pickerel, cormorants do.

I'm not so sure about that. I've been around for 40(ish) years and never noticed as many swans as I have this last few years. Also, totally unscientific, but in the areas where I duck hunt, since the increase in swan action I have noticed a reduction in duck nests, ducklings and adult ducks in the fall. I haven't counted, but I'm out there a lot and have noticed less ducks.

Look at the picture in the article.... tell me how are you going to teach your kids to water ski/kneeboard or any other water sports for that matter without getting hurt! Let alone they reproduce twice/year, that tells you they will out compete our species!
I guess people would want them to come in if you want to drive the waterfront prices down!!

I'm just doing the math from when they were reported in the country and what year it is now.
And that sucks about where you hunt, I hunt on lake Erie and we are seeeing more ducks in the past few years than we have have previously.
Animal numbers kinda work in waves, 2 years there will be a crap load of Fox and they will eat a crap load of rabbits and then there will be less and les rabbits, then there won't be enough rabbits, so then there will be less Fox and because there is lass Fox the rabbits will thrive again. It's one big cycle with everything.
