Quinte Fishing

Hello! I am a long time Quinte resident and fisherman.....first time poster.

Anyone else on here concerned at all with the new proposed marina in Quinte West and the impact it may have on the fishing in the area?

My concerns are losing the use of the launch by the cold storage, high boat traffic at the mouth which is a great spot to fish, but won't be so great if there is a high volume of big boat traffic and being in a small aluminum boat. Also the walleye seem like they are making a good comeback in the last couple years and the fishing has been great in that area and would hate to see anything impact this great comeback.

I've been in my 14' in the river and have one of those huge boats go by in a NO WAKE ZONE and just about swamp my boat! Wasn't too impressed.

Yep same here.....I have a 14 ft aluminum as well that is semi deep and semi wide, and some of these bigger boats go by at a unacceptable speed and too close as well. Unfortunately a bigger boat just isn't in my budget right now and quite frankly I like the 14 footer I have.

As I am sure most are familiar with, and unless I am totally wrong, any alterations to shoreline would all have to be spproved by MNR, and as this would have a potential impact onthe fisheries, DFO would have to weigh in as well. In cases like that where there would be a significant impact, there should be some notice and public input.

This proposal has been around for a few years,(assuming its the one your talking about)(Trenton) and falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Environment ( as do most major development projects seeking approval, pending the completion of an environmental assessment). Various agencies, including DFO,have contributed reports, which are used in an environmental assessment.Public meetings have already been held. There has, also been opposition of the project, for various reasons. However, the assessment was recently approved. The project is once more, moving forward. Personally I think it is a huge waste of money. There isn't near the same level of yacht traffic there was 20 years ago. With the gas prices the way they are it is a dying pass time except for the exceptionally rich. So who is going to pay for the upkeep on this when it doesn't generate enough revenue to support itself? Us good old tax payers. There used to be groups of 5 - 8 boats going through the Murray Canal several times a day, now your lucky if there is 8 a day. Just pouring money down a rabbit hole.

not concerned at all. The marina is a great way to revitalize the trenton water front, its what this town needs. It will not harm the fishing grounds as there is no lock traffic around prime fishing times (spring and late fall). If anything, it will both bring money in, beef up the waterfront and possibly dredge the shallow waters of the estuary for deeper channels. They have been silted in pretty badly in the last 10 years.

I was going to say that a marina is a great way to stimulate economic activity in Trenton. Every community that has a quality marina sees increased foot traffic to local amenities and service and goods dollars spend increase from the boat owners and guests who visit and spend time on them. Now, the proximity to the mouth of the Trent River may not be ideal, but I'm sure it will be dealt with accordingly. Remember, us fishermen don't own the waterways people, we have to share with all recreational boaters. There has been a slight decline in total number of big boats on the waterways, but don't tell that to the full marinas in Cobourg, Whitby, Newcastle, etc.

I'd like to see one over by Deseronto.

I'm a shore fisherman, and the outskirts of marinas are always good shore fishing spots. My daughter and I can spend a whole day catching anything from sunfish to perch, to catfish and walleye... it adds accessible shoreline to those of us without a boat...
