Just wondering if anybody knows of a formula to figure out how much line is retrieved (in inches/feet) per handle turn on a baitcaster?? I know the ratio means rotations of the spool per 1 turn of the handle, but how much line is actually coming in based on a full spool. I would assume line diameter would be a factor in this too.

Thanks...

That really depends on the size of your spool/how full the spool is. If you want a ruff idea pull some line out put a piece of tape on the line. Now line the tape up with the bottom of your first guide on your rod. Make one turn on your reel then measure the distance between the tape and your first guide........... Or just google the specs of the reel. Hope this helps

Pi(spool diameter)(ratio)
As said, depends on the ratio and spool diameter as mathematically the line reeled in per one revolution of the handle changes with either. The line diameter will make the spool diameter change more apparent as line is added or subtracted from the spool and the amount of line per turn will vary accordingly.

But for an example:
Full Spool diameter=1.25"
ratio = 5:1

therfore
3.1416(1.25)(5)=19.635"
If you want the decimal portion of the inches in 1/16 of an inch multiply it by 16 and add the inches
19+0.635/16 =19 10/16" or better said 19 5/8"

If you want feet, divide the inch decimal from above by 12
19.635/12 = 1.63625'
If you want feet and inches, multiply the decimal portion by 12 and add to your feet
1' + 0.635625(12) = 1'-7.6275"
If you want the decimal portion of the inches in 1/16 of an inch multiply it by 16 and add to your feet and inches
1'-7"+0.6275(16) = 1'-7 10/16" or better said as 1'-7 5/8"

Of course we are a metric country after all:
For example:
Full Spool diameter=30mm
ratio = 5:1

therfore
3.1416(30)(5)=471.24mm

...or just do what hookingeyes said and measure it.

Which reel do you have it should say on the schematics on your reel box or on the side of your box unless its older always look it up on tackle tour they did alot reviews on different reels

It was just a question about reels in general...whether it could be figured out just by knowing what the gear ratio was... Measuring the line would be kinda hard to do when the reel is in a box at the store....lol

Somerdink...Thanks for the tip...I did look up a couple of reels on Tackle Tour, (along with the one I have now) and there was lots of good info there.
