When I was on the train yesterday to Toronto, the Napanee River is up and flowing like crazy at Springside Park and the river is open from the falls down past the bridge.

There would be enough water for the spawn, the only question mark is the water temp?????

Superdad...that is a very good question and I would love to hear some theories on the effects water temps have on the spawn from some of the faithful fishers.
This time last year I was watching the wind and waves take care of the last remnants of ice on Lake Rosseau up here in Muskoka...this past weekend I ventured out on a good 18" of hard ice...it'll be awhile yet for us. I know a couple of cubes in my Wiser's cools it just enough to make it all that more enjoyable!

I convinced a large group I fish with annually around the end of June to give BofQ a go this year. After extensive research on June fishing on this site going back over the years I suggested (and we all agreed) that we would move our week to as close to May as we could to avoid the Shad spawn and the dreaded lockjaw that seems to take hold this time of year. June 10th is our week.

I am thinking here that a late spring may just work in our favour...as I type this post, I look outside here in Huntsville watching the snow fall...again!

Look forward to reading some theories.

Timing of the spawning run is believed to be influenced primarily by water
temperature and water velocity. Although there can be considerable variation in water
temperatures, spawning activity generally coincides with temperatures which enhance
egg viability. For example, the optimal temperature for fertilization is between 6-12°C,
while the optimal incubation temperature is from 9-15°C (Hokanson 1977; Alberta
Department of Forestry, Lands and Wildlife 1986; Newbury and Gaboury 1993). A
review of information on water temperatures associated with walleye spawning activity
(Appendix 1) reveals that the first movements of male fish generally commence at
temperatures in the 2-5°C range. Although spawning activity can occur over a wide
range of water temperatures, it usually occurs from 5-10°C with peak activity in the 7-
8°C range. Spawning activity has usually ceased (females left the spawning grounds)
by the time water temperatures reach 10-11°C.

The info is a little old...lol, but I would imagine it is still much the same...Here is the link if you want to read more.....

Interesting read Walleye 9...thanks for sharing, it will be interesting to compare some of the fishing reports this year to the many years past. Time will tell.
