That 50 lb salmon is out there somewhere and that would be the time it would foul up or break.
But also the amount of line on the spool will affect how fast you can reel in. The more line on the spool, the bigger the diameter, the more feet reeled in per turn of handle. When trolling deep water and there's lots of line out there, it makes a difference. All linecounter reel manufactures recommend filling the spool as they are more accurate when full for this same reason. Some may remember the math from an earlier thread on this.
