It is not stray voltage. If the lake water was pure or distilled with no minerals we would not have a problem. A battery is created by submerging 2 dissimilar metals in an electrolyte. It produces a voltage. With the lake water having minerals in it, this creates is a very weak electrolyte. The dissimilar metals are the stainless steel down-rigger cables and the die-cast aluminum out-drive or lower unit on the outboard. Thus you have a small battery around the boat with a very small voltage but it does have an affect on the fish at certain times of the day.

With the black box you can increase or decrease that voltage to zero.

Just have time to catch up with this spread. The late spring has killed me. I'm working like a rented mule right now.

As for the voltage I'm more of a believer then a non believer. There is a lot of science behind the effects of voltage with fish and it's undeniable. It's also undeniable that if you put a volt meter on your rigger cable and it carries a voltage (irregardless of how it gets there or why it's there) it's there. Last year I played with it a bit when my riggers went cold but my core, coppers, and dipsy setups were firing. I can't remember the exact voltage but it was high I think 2+ volts. When I took alligator clips from the negative terminal to my rigger wire they would instantly drop to 0. I did find my riggers improved. The problem is it messes with your head and when thing are slow and you start wondering about voltage you lose all confidence in your spread and presentations. I have found confidence (not to be confused with cockiness) is probable the most important factor in a "good" fisherman. If having a black box gives you confidence it's invaluable. Even if it doesn't grounding your riggers if they have voltage is cheap and easy and eliminates a possible confidence shaker.

I don't doubt there is a voltage on the rigger wire, I just don't think there is a voltage that a fish can sense a hundred feet back or down. Does the voltage change with the depth of the downrigger, like the deeper you go the more voltage?

Polliwog, the deeper you go the less voltage you produce but not much. If you were fishing 60' and then dropped your balls to 130' there might be a decrease from say .65 volts to .5
And from what I have read, it only effects your spread when your running short leads inside 25'
So if I'm running a flasher and meat rig 10' from the ball, and I have allot of stray voltage on my boat it can effect catch rates.

I bought an older boat, so I got to do some testing to see what this boat creates. And then with the black box you can adjust that. Also I have read that your riggers balls should b insulated from your rigger cables. The dissimilar metals found in the lead can create a charge in the water. How much truth to that is up to the guy reading it I guess.

The voltage isn't basically on the rigger cable. The rigger cable is the positive terminal of the battery that is produced around the boat. The out drive lower unit is the ground terminal.
