Yeah ...give us a hint.

Is it a pull start or electric start outboard?

Is it an inboard?

If electric start, does it at least turn over when the key is turned? If not, check the fuses...learned that the hard way and thanks to the folks on this forum, they steered me in the right direction.

Sounds like battery is dying but all electronics work i have a 3 bank charger. The starter shaft wont go back down into place either it also was not catching so o moved the teeth to line it up. Thats about the best i can explain. Thanks

I would start with the obvious...Fuel source, make sure the gas is fresh and if an outboard the fuel connection is set up correctly.

I had an embarrassing moment a few year back with my 40HP Merc...after winterizing the boat I disconnected the fuel line from the portable tank and engine, when I hooked it back up in the spring...I did it backwards not knowing that was even possible. What made it even more embarrasing was that I had a potential purchaser standing right there with me ...for about an hour while we tried to start it. It would spit and sputter after pumping the crap out of the primer and then realized my error...started right up!

Thankfully the purchaser became just that!

Try another battery sounds like low voltage. Just because your electronics work doesn't mean you have enough reserve to crank the engine.
Also check the fuses in your charger.
Clean and lube the starter gear it should move freely.

Good morning.

There are a number of things to try.

Pull the plugs and clean them with gas. Make sure all spark plug wires are clean and firmly in place to allow electricity to the plugs. Me, I always put a squirt of quick start in the cylinders. I know a bunch will not like that.

Make sure your kill key is in place.

Give the battery a boost. If the cold amps are down just a little it can be a pain.

Check your fuel filter for water.

As mentioned lube up the starter.

Good luck.

Regards

One that gave me an oppurtunity for a long row home was the battery terminals. Did my usual spring prep. started in the driveway and away we went. Drift fished and used the trolling motor for about an hour and when we went to start, nothing at all. Gauges worked, radio worked but no fire. When I got home and took the terminals off the battery there was siginificant crap between the terminals. Took a brass brush to the terminals and all the connections and every thing worked fine. Realized that the gauges and radio worked because that connector was on the bottom of the pile on the positive terminal, the starter was on the top so the crud on the others insulated it from the terminal.

Make sure your battery has a good charge. Like stated previously clean the battery terminals.
You said the starter is not engaging the fly wheel. If you have a good connection and battery then I would suspect a bad starter motor.
