Was out this aft and couldn't believe how many dead sheepshead (most were quite large) were floating in the Bay in front of Belleville and Pt Anne.
Anyone know if they are being killed by a virus/parasite? Or maybe a result of the harsh winter and cold water temps/lack of early Spring baitfish?
The sheer number we saw were quite alarming to say the least (we saw at least two dozen dead floaters in about 5 hours).
I think I remember a similar die off a few years ago and believe it was a result of a virus on their gills?
Water temps getting better....a consistent 62 degrees of Belleville/Pt Anne (but managed only 3 'eyes for the table).

Last time I investigated a mass sheepshead kill in Hay Bay it was due to a sudden change in water temps. The speculation was a manure spill but the MNR investigated and found it was a temp fluctuation the sheep head couldn't deal with. Not saying this was the case here though...

MNR feels it's possible that it is VHS. Samples were sent on Monday to Guelph for testing. I haven't heard the results yet.

Thanks Scott.
Any idea if this VHS is specific to these fish only?
