I'm very glad Outdoor Canada had the balls to finally shed some light on these behaviors.
Unfortunately the Moira is my home watershed and I see this all too often.
Even if the fish were harvested for eggs and done under the protective rights some are privy to.... The wasting of the meat is an absolute bloody shame.
Sadly...it's sometimes embarrassing to be a human.

Red Alert on walleye poachers??? I highly doubt there was any poaching going on here. If you're allowed to do it, it ain't poaching. I don't agree with the waste that's left on the shorelines, or the waste of the meat, but I don't really see the difference between harvesting hundreds and hundreds of fish by licensed anglers that are full of eggs in the months of Oct-Feb from Adolphus Reach to Trenton, than harvesting fish full of eggs in the rivers in April by the Natives.

There r family's that cannot afford to buy their meat at Costco, I got no problem with them going out and getting a feed of walleye or putting a moose in their freezer, but u don't shoot a moose and take a steak or even a 1/4 home, same as these walleye, eat what u kill, what is shown in these pics is disgusting, whoever did this has no respect for the fish, other anglers, or even a neighbour that could use a bite to eat.

What do those anglers do that catch those walleye full of eggs in the fall. Stab holes in them and toss them back in? In order to make your comparison logical, that's what would have to happen...other than the odd trophy fish, are guys keeping 10-15 pounders in the fall? I really don't think they are. It called selective harvest.

Good point Parksy! Also would like to point out that with a slot size, daily limit and a possession limit to abide by, licensed law abiding anglers should in no way be lumped into the same category as a person that does this type of thing. Can't fathom how some people could think its acceptable. Clearly they do since it happens.....

To make your comparison logical, you need to realize that it's not only 10-15 pound walleye that carry eggs!!! As I stated in my previous post.....I don't agree with the waste, or the mess left on shore. As far as catching fish that are pre-spawn in April in the rivers by certain people, those same fish are also pre-spawn November-February, as they are full of eggs, but because the season is open, everything is alright..... You talk about selective harvest???? Have you guys never caught a 3-5 pounder in the fall/winter that had eggs in it, and kept it??? I know I have!!!!! In no way am I defending what has happened here, but just trying to say that we as licensed anglers do just as much damage by keeping 3-7 pounders fall/winter. Also, I'm sure the amount of pre-spawn fish that are caught by licensed anglers between November/Feb, highly out-weigh the number of pre-spawn fish that are speared in April.

I think that the main issue is that none of the meat was harvested. If you read the article it has nothing to do with fishing out of season, but has to do with the senseless waste of these fish. By law natives have the right to spear when ever they want, so it is pointless to discuss that here, however no ethical human being would kill and pile up those fish just for the fun of it.

That is the entire issue that was focused on in the article. And just to clear it up, I know many natives that would be outraged by that as well.

I must be reading a different article....When I look at the pictures, all but maybe 3 or 4 of the fish have been cleaned, and it also mentions at the bottom of the article about being out of season.
It was the title of the article that made me laugh....Something about Red Alert on Walleye Poachers. I think Outdoor Canada needs to do a little more research before writing an article. If this was natives, the title of the article is a bunch of crap, and half the article about spearing and being out of season is a bunch of crap, but still, I agree there is absolutely no need for the waste and the mess left on shore.
