Hey Perchslayer, If you think that is a bass, you should give up fishing, and take up lawn bowling.

Lol yeah that's a bass alright. The Northern Pike is one of the most common fish in our lakes, if you have to ask a board what kind of fish this is then perhaps your suggestion of lawn bowling or bocce ball would be a safer alternative to fishing altogether if your having a hard time identifying a common sport fish specie.

If the board is joke, stay off it. If you don't know what type of fish you are catching, perhaps you should get an understanding as opposed to getting pissed off about people's remarks. The internet has turned fisherman into a miserable bunch. No reply is good enough for everyone.....

I think an innocent joke was made by Matt about himself catching pike when he's really trying to catch bass instead. Charlie, your answer is given by many correctly, it is a pike. Anything further than that is out of context and should not be taken personally. I second that Big Mac.

I hope the chart below helps you understand the difference better.

Thanks for posting that Dave.

It's actually quite common for anglers who don't regularly target esox species to have difficulty telling them apart, especially between the Northern Pike and the spotted pattern Muskies. Muskies Canada goes to great lengths to educate the public by distributing literature, posting KTD (know the difference)signs at boat launches and through the MCI website. For more on knowing the difference and MCI check out the following link. http://www.muskiescanada.ca/general_information/ktd.php

The best way to identify them is counting the pores on the bottom of the lower jaw. 5 or less you have a pike, 6 or more and you have a Muskie or Hybrid. Tail shape is another giveaway. Muskies have pointed tips on the tail, while Hybrid/Tiger and Pike have rounded fins. Using these two tests you can identify all three species.

5 or less pores on lower jaw and rounded tail = Northern Pike
6 or more pores on lower jaw and rounded tail = Hybrid/Tiger
6 or more pores and pointed tail = Muskie

Tight lines and good fishing.
