Need help/advice... my tilt/trim goes up, but WIL NOT go down.... the pump motor runs, just not doing the job. Anybody know what rebuild kit and where to order?? Better yet, who around Belleville does rebuild?? I have the unit out of the boat now. Bay Marine does not work on things prior to 1995, and JP Marine cant touch for a couple weeks and we go on vacation to Algonquin next Wednesday, so I am stuck...... Any/all help appreciated

You say the pump motor runs; does it run for both up AND down? The pump is probably not running when you are trimming down and that would most likely be a relay problem. I don't know your motor but I think the relays are located on the front of the motor near the carbs. One is up, other is down.

You should be able to switch the two relays and then your motor will go down but not up, confirming that a relay is the issue.

Automotive store should be able to match it. Easy fix!

Did you try Belleville Sport and Lawn? They might be backed up... but have lots of Evinrude parts

the motor runs for both up (the motor does go up), and motor runs for down (but motor stays in up position)... only way to get motor back down is to unscrew the bypass screw.... I understand that if the motor runs for both up and down, the relays are okay.
This started last year, and i had low oil condition... once filled and cycled thru the up/down sequence, it worked great... thinking needs rebuild, but not sure where to get parts... will take to Brian at Belleville Sport and Lawn. Thanks so far all!

thanks Grizz for the link....
it isn't relay switch or fluid related.. I removed the unit from the boat and applied 12Volt DC directly to motor and the tilt piston goes up (extends). since DC motor, I reverse the leads and the motor runs in the opposite direction, but the tilt piston stays extended. it is like the transmission fluid is not pumping to the top side of the tilt piston. J&P may take a crack at it since I have it outta the boat.

I have seen this before with OMC products and it was the relay ordered through Wards Marine in kingston was an easy fix. Have seen this on 4 different evinrude and johnson motors from 1980 to 1996

I had exactly the same issue with a 94 evenrude, after playing with a number of things took it to a buddies to switch out the relays from his motor to see if that was it and discovered a ground in behing the down relay. Just off enough to cause the problem, cleaned it up, refastened and it's still going five years later.
